Died: as prisoner #16770 - Aug. 14, 1941 in Auschwitz
Canonized: Oct. 10, 1982 - by John Paul the Great
St. Maximilian is best known for switching places with a prisoner who was ordered to be executed. The prisoner yelled out, "Oh, my poor wife. My poor children. I shall never see them again!" - to which the priest did the unthinkable.
