I think it has to do with the disconnect between the Despereaux of the book and the Despereaux of the movie :( Why, oh why do film makers feel the need to rewrite the story when they make the "movie based on"... sad.
We read this as a family. The book was so very rich and powerful. The movie was eye candy and fluff. No lessons, no nothing but fluff. Boring. And quite sad.

My kids loved the book. The movie, not so much. I didn't read the book but really enjoyed the movie and the animation. Oh, well.

We loved the book. LOVED. But the movie... yeah, the kids gave it a big thumbs down.
We LOVED the book too!!! It was great how it all came together :)
The book is ALWAYS better than the movie, especially in this case where the movie took a lot of liberties!
We also loved the book!! All four liked the movie, but no love for it at all.
But that book. . .great stuff!
