Freezer Full

Last Friday morning, before going to the airport for our Houston trip, Paul drove about an hour north to pick up our side of beef. [sorry, Chick-Fil-A cows!] Our Grass Fed Beef! Yay. We split it with another homeschool family of 7.

We are newbies at this endeavor and had no idea how to order the cuts - to be honest, I don't really know my cuts of beef. Apparently the processor guy told Paul that "we did it wrong". Well, not really - but we could've done a better job of getting more beef. I ordered all our steaks and stuff, boneless. I figured less weight and no worries. Well I'm finding out now that that's not neccessarily the way to go. There's a lot of beef that's wasted when you go boneless.

So now we have a freezer full of cow down in the basement...

On top, those are 2 lb. pkgs of ground beef - we got 43 of those! My mouth dropped when Paul told me. 43? Really? That's a lot!

The bottom portion is... the rest! Steaks and roasts, mostly - I guess. I really haven't gone through it to look for myself.

I browned 2 lbs of ground beef on Wednesday and I didn't even have to drain it. That right there is worth all the moola we paid [pun obviously intended :)].

i have been wanting to do that. i hear it is much cheaper though it is a lot of mooola up front. i too wouldnt know the cow's arse from a hole in the ground...in terms of cuts.

That is so neat! I've wanted to do that too, but so far our family is just one carnivore, one vegetarian, and a toddler, so it's probably not worth it at this point!

If it makes you feel any better, we have a family cattle ranch and I don't know the cuts either. The pathetic thing? I have to buy my meat from the store. How lame is that!!! My father-in-law doesn't want to cause more work for ranch manager by feeding out steers for all of us. Jealous of your freezer full of meat. Make sure your freezer is on a dedicated line. We messed that up once and lost the whole freezer full in a big, soggy mess. (and stinky!)

We love ours too! Forgot to count it though, but 43 lbs. of ground beef is incredible!

I need to try that if we can scrape together the cash! Who did you get it from?

We get half a grass fed cow too! Way worth the money! Only ours won't be here until Sept. And we are running dangerously low on beef. I might have to...ack...pick some up at the grocery store! We are also getting half a hog this year and five roaster chickens. Yum!
